SUGAR - THE REAL ENEMY

I have just finished drinking a bottle of one of those popular brands of fizzy drinks after a long abstinence. And as I did this,  I recalled a line of a health article I came across a while back,  that read that drinking a bottle of soft drink was like sucking on ten (10) cubes of sugar one after the other. Scary,  isn't it?!!!

Maybe,  like me,  you have wondered why our favorite things to eat such as chocolates, candies, ice creams,  soft drinks,  pastries, packed juices,  desserts and sweets; are the unhealthy stuffs? Why do our bodies crave these processed foods when we are bored or depressed and find it so - comforting? Why is sugar so bad? And why should it be avoided or at best,  reduced in our diets? So many questions. Let's at least try to find answers to the last two.

Excessive sugar intake can do more damage than good. It can lead to Type 2 diabetes, premature aging, obesity,  tooth decay,

acne,  pile,  fatty liver and a host of inflammatory and chronic diseases such as arthritis and heart disease. In fact,  some recent studies have argued that sugar and foods broken down into sugar,  like the refined carbohydrates, to be the major cause of inflammation and not cholesterol.

Manufacturers of edible consumer goods are sometimes deliberately deceptive, cleverly hiding the sugar content in processed foods under various names such as dextrose,  sucrose,  maltose,  fructose, corn syrup,  sorghum syrup,  to mention a few. All these creatively constructed names are simply cover ups to hide this sweet but dangerous enemy.

What are the deliberate steps you are taking to reduce or totally eliminate sugar from your daily diet? I would love to hear from you. Do share....
