HEALTHY HOME-MADE SMOOTHIES: INGREDIENTS FOR THE PERFECT SMOOTHIE

Smoothies

Smoothies are now the new crave for the health conscious. Preparing a natural home-made fruits or vegetable smoothie is a healthier option than packed fruit juices. Contrary to popular opinion that packed juices are healthy, packed fruit juices are usually high in sugar, low in natural vitamins and empty of Fibre. Vegetable smoothies have more nutrients and less sugar than fruit smoothies, but the best smoothies, in my opinion, is a combination of both fruits and vegetables.

The perfect smoothie, though might be a little pricey, should contain:

Protein powder. This will not only thicken your smoothie, but it is rich in energy  and muscle building compounds. You can get this in any major supermarket.

Low fat milk such as almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk. These are healthy plant sources of milk and they are low in calories.

Seeds or wholegrains such as oats, flax seeds, Chia seeds. Oats are great in your smoothies, they are not only healthy and high in fibre but they are also very filling. With oats in your smoothies, you can be sure you have a complete meal.

Nuts and fruits containing healthy omega 3 fats such as avocados, peanut butter, almond butter, walnuts. This addition gives your smoothie a silky smooth taste, flavor and texture. They are also rich in energy giving compounds.

Sweet fruits that would thicken the mixture, sweeten it and make it more filling like bananas, mangoes and apples.

Vegetables like pumpkin leaves(ugu), cucumber, green, cabbage. Green vegetables are rich in anti-aging nutrients, fibre and folic acid.

Spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, or cayenne pepper. They give the smoothie a spicy-hot, sexy flavor, that just blows your mind. These spices are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Watery fruits or teas such as the green tea, water melon, pineapples or coconut water. This component ensures your smoothies are not to thick and adds to the sweet taste.
Flavors such as vanilla or strawberry. This is optional. They are like the perfect finish to a perfect smoothie.

The good thing about smoothies is that it gives you room to be as creative and as imaginative as you like. You can switch up the ingredients however you like, using less or using more.

Gathering ingredients for your smoothies don't have to be expensive. You can stay within a limited budget and still make a super-nutritious smoothie using fruits and vegetables that are in season.

 So get creative, guys!
