Kinky hair |
There are a lot of misconceptions about black people's natural hair and these misconceptions have crowned it the most misunderstood hair type in the world, and the most unappreciated, even by blacks. A popular misconception is that kinky hair (the natural hair that grows out of the scalp of a black person) is unmanageable and does not grow. The only reason why your kinky hair seems problematic is because you have not taken the time to appreciate your unique tight curls and find out what it truly needs. Kinky hair, like every other hair type, needs some tender loving care for it to grow and this article is for those black women - and men - who have decided to embrace their natural hair.

The key to managing your kinky curls is moisturize! moisturize! Moisturize! Your natural curls thrive on water and other organic moisturizers. Apply only completely organic products on your hair such as Shea Butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, the Virgin olive oil, wheat germ oil, grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil, aloe vera and rosemary oil. These moisturizers soften your hair, prevent breakage and encourage growth. Contrary to popular belief, petroleum jelly might not be the best option on your scalp or for your hair. The sticky thickness of the jelly could easily clog your scalp and attract dirt to your hair.
Another trick to managing your kinky curls is to ensure your hair is wet or slightly damp before you oil it and comb it. Your kinky curls might look deceptively stubborn and unruly but it is the most fragile of all hair types. Because of the thickness of your afro, it tends to get easily dry and brittle. So, never comb your hair without first wetting it and oiling it. Ensure that the water and organic products, you are applying, get to your hair roots. Apply Shea Butter as a base, with any of the natural oils mentioned above, to your damp hair to seal in the moisture, making it supple and easy to untangle and comb. Always comb your hair with a wide tooth comb, because it goes through your tight curls easily without tugging at it or breaking it.
Your kinky black hair is unique and beautiful and all it needs from you to grow is your understanding, patience and care.
